David Cook Fan

Yes, I am one of them.

Though I didn't vote for him, I sure gave up my precious sleeping time to watch replays of the American Idol performance and result shows, devoted considerable amount of disk space and bandwidth to download his songs (of course, that's the hubby with my coaxing) and even this blog post all for the guy.

I even did some research on the Idol performances of Chris Daughtry and Bo Bice and mhen, David Cook just sounded so original! My heart melted with his rendition of Always be my baby, Billy Jean and Hello (my top 3 favorites). Wish he'd do well in his career.

Rock On!

MySoju.com: feeding your drama addiction

I was looking for a copy of the Japanese Drama Summer Snow when I landed on this site that had all the Asian dramas that I was dying to watch! It's got everything from Lovers to Coffee Prince and Gokusen. All you need is a good internet connection to really enjoy watching your fave Asian dramas online.

Perfect for M

We engaged a 26-year old lady (M) to talk about the state of her heart. Here's her story:
  1. She's been set-up to go out on a date with this guy whose into seafaring.
  2. On their first date, they went to Jollibee. She ordered an ice craze. The guy gave him an "are you sure?" look (she's not the slim and slender type, that's why) and ordered a burger for her in case she changes her mind.
  3. Guy asks if he could take her picture. Girl says that she's not comfortable having her picture taken solo. So they squeezed in and had their picture taken using his cellphone camera.
  4. Day after, the guy's mother died.
  5. Their next meeting would have been on a binyag where they were both asked to stand as godparents.
  6. The guy didn't make it; he recently underwent an operation. It bled so he sought medical help for it. Girl already thinks she's a jinx.
  7. They guy's brother came to the binyag to stand in for him, let a little too many info out and led the crowd to cheer on the budding relationship between the guy and the girl (the guy's laptop had the girl's photo as wallpaper, and the brother willingly wanted to be her bro-in-law).
  8. But there was no second date. And the text messages came few and far in between. The last came the night before the interview and M felt that the guy was just compelled to text her so she told him not to if he's busy.
  9. And he said he was busy.
  10. Sayang, M really liked him, and in M's words: "He's not really good looking but he's just perfect for me."

Chinese Pamahiin

I learned from the hubby's aunt that...

It is bad luck to divulge your age to anyone when you already are past your prime. The heavens will hear you and will take you away.

A suuuuus!

One Spidey Evening

A spider was spinning webs on the ceiling over our bed. I heard Koy shout out in panic at the sight of it.

Koy: “Mama, may spider! Patya!”

Mama: “Indi lang! Ang spider ginaka-on ya na ang mga mosquitoes and mga insects, para indi kita pag i-bite! Friend ta na ang spider! Si Charlotte na siya! (with reference to Charlotte’s Web)”

Koy: “Indi na siya si Charlotte ya, dako to ya si Charlotte ya!”

Mama: (Napahiya si Mama) “Si Charlotte Junior na siya! Te Charlotte man gyapon iya ngalan” (Palusot pa!)

Mama: Te, higda na, kay ma sleep na ta. Pray anay before you sleep. Pray ka para bantayan ka sang angel mo kag sang spider mag sleep ka. Make the sign of the cross na.

Koy: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Spider of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here…

In Memoriam; Catcher (unknown - 30 Apr 2008)

We lost Catcher, our dear old pug, yesterday to heatstroke. But that sounds sad and boring so we'd rather think that she was murdered and left to die in the scorching heat of the sun. She's old, 8 to 10 years old maybe, the vet couldn't really be sure.

The Joy of Being. We had Catcher last year, during the time when we were in dire need of an additional preoccupation. The hubby's cousin gave her to us. One, because she had loads of dogs to take care already and two, because nobody wanted to have her. She's old and she has this tick problem. We never had second thoughts about having her. And on her first day at home, we just knew we'd like to have her around. Much like parents, we instantly included Catcher's needs on our grocery list: shampoo, powder, her own comb, leash, etc.

Meet and Greet. Catcher became an instant celebrity in our neighborhood. She's a pug, so she's just cute in her ugliness. The neighbors loved her, they even borrowed her sometimes and take her for a walk (actually, one of the neighbors was just doing that to get the househelp's attention, my guess.) But in all of Catcher's cuteness, she is the laziest dog I've ever know. She likes to be walked, yes, but after a few blocks, she would just stop. Even if it meant being immobile in the middle of the street.

Funny Moments. I've had my share of bloopers involving Catcher. One time, I decided to bring her along during one of my morning walks. I was strolling down the road to the market when a guy tapped my shoulder and said, "Day, ang ido mo, ho, nawigit." Turns out, Catcher's collar was loose and it slipped off her neck. So literally I was dragging a dogless leash for a few steps or so. It's a good thing pugs, old pugs at that, don't make a habit of running fast. It would have added to my already humiliating situation. There was also this one time when I, again despite what already had happened, took her out for a walk. We were crossing the street when suddenly she just stopped walking. Right there, in the middle of the street, stiff in catatonia. I prodded her a few times but didn't get much of a response. So I had to pick her up, all 27 kilos of her much to the amusement of jeepney drivers passing through. Because I was already in love with her, I took her out again, a couple of times after that incident. Much more prepared to deal with her stubborn stops and the loud wheezing sound that she does, which made people we pass by turn to look with pity. Ha! if only they knew, tired or not tired, she's just the wheezing type. I wasn't punishing her, no, I was actually giving her her much needed walk.

Old Habits Die Hard. Catcher had this habit of scratching and howling. We brought her to the vet who gave her vitamins and this meds you apply on her back, which was supposed to kill the ticks in her body. There isn't really much treatment that the vet could give her considering that she was already in her old age. The vet also said that she's surprisingly healthy. At some point, Catcher must have had a handler who brings her along wherever she goes. I noticed this from the few times that we took her out with her on our jeep. She knew very well how to conduct herself and make the most of the gust of the wind on her face. She liked riding the trisikad too, and she should almost create a scene when it was time to get off, or was I the one making a scene? calling out her name a few times and scolding her for not getting off and finally booting her off the seat and cradling her like a baby. That with the whole neighborhood watching.

It's Lonely being Alone. You cannot know what you really are when are not with your own kind. We never had poop and pee problems until we took on another dog, Prince, a standard pincher. Somehow, Catcher, who very well knew where to poop and pee found out that it was okay to do it anywhere. It was a bit of an adjustment for all of us. Until finally, Prince understood the whole poop-pee arrangements. Catcher and Prince were very much the opposite of each other. While Catcher could get languid for a whole day, Prince was everywhere, gnawing at anything he could get his teeth on, barking at the neighbor's dogs and running about the yard. Despite so, they found comfort on each other's company. When it's cold, they would both keep each other warm and they would walk around the house (of course, Catcher would be trailing behind). Until recently, they took their relationship to a "higher level."

Potential Problem. Did I just say a "higher level"? That could actually be translated into a few thousands on meds and the vet's bill in the event of a successful conception. Oh yes, I've been worrying about my son's tuition fee, now I would have to save up for Catcher's birthing! Would she even survive it? Well, she's old... and it appears she hadn't had pups before (and you'd wonder how I was able to deduce that, eh?). And the pups, what would they look like? pure breed pug + pure breed pincher = ?

Death As it Comes. In our twisted moments (separately, thank gawd!), the hubby and I had been thinking of how things would eventually end for Catcher. I mean, she's old, and eventually she will have to die. Will it just be a case of dying in her sleep? difficulties due to birthing? will she get sick and we'd have to spend every peso we have on our piggy bank just to buy her additional time? How weird can we get? What we didn't expect though that on an ordinary Wednesday morning, after days of rain, she would succumb to heatstroke after just a few minutes of sunbathing. I wasn't home when it happened and the hubby just informed me through our chat session. And that's just it, Catcher is gone, our dear old pug.

Recollecting my thoughts. The news stunned me. For a moment, the hubble-bubble just drowned down into this numb silence for me. Catcher is gone. Catcher is gone... It took quite some time before I got over the news and rejoined reality. It felt like something in me was taken away. There was no pain in it, but it just doesn't make me whole anymore. She's just a dog, I know. But because I allowed the dog to "affect" me, I am now without a part of myself, with her demise. There won't be carrying her like a baby anymore, no scratching and howling, no more sitting by the stairs without a care in the world. There will just be the memories and stories to tell. Catcher, our dear old pug, is gone.

Parting Words. Catcher...you left a part of you in me, much as I have given you a part of me. We will forever be connected, though in spirit. I will remember you with fondness. Thank you for making us part of your life. I'd like to remember you by with this picture of your kind, which I found in the web until I get to upload your pics:

Ciao, Catcher, Bon Voyage.

Chicken Pox Chronicles : Watching Movies #3

The Good Night (2007). I've watched Vanilla Sky and took a liking for it, but this one, I'm not so sure. A struggling commercial jingle composer having a monotonous life, having these dreams with a beautiful woman in it. He seeks the help of an expert (and a practitioner, who claims to be an expert) to understand his dreams and to manipulate them so he could carry on with these encounters with the beautiful woman. The oddness in his behavior put a strain in his real life relationship and caused the eventual rift between him and his wife. The next thing he learns is that the woman in his dreams is a real person. What now? Hmmmm, maybe it could have been done better. Or maybe, Vanilla Sky was just great.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007). This is an odd movie. About a guy who found social interaction repulsive. One day, his officemate showed him this website on life-size dolls (you know, toys for big boys). He ordered one and made a companion of it-her. It-her even had a name - Bianca. Because Lars was a nice guy, the whole community actually played along with his girlfriend stint - doll on a wheelchair, who according to him was conservative and wouldn't sleep with him until they were married. He had her live with his brother and his pregnant wife. Bianca got a room for herself, and was bathed and dressed much like any ordinary person. Suddenly, Bianca was getting a life of her own, members of the community were asking favors. She was asked to do volunteer work in the hospital reading stories to children (actually holding a talking story book). She also gained friends who bring her to a salon to have her haircut and even shop for new clothes. She got invited to benefits where the invitations were not extended to Lars. Lars, on the other hand, finally noticed this co-worker, who has been giving him some attention in the past. She was kindling a budding relationship with another officemate. And much to my amusement, Lars and Bianca had their first fight when Lars got home following the flirting incident (between the two officemates, that is) You go watch the movie so you know what happens next. Haha!

Leon (1994). This one's been lying around the house for ages. The hubby said it's a good movie. Not much of the serious stunts that you see in action movies these days but a good solid story about a hitman and a girl he took in after her parents were killed in a drug bust operation by some crook cops. Natalie Portman did very well here. And Jean Reno... is Jean Reno, and the twang (again?) just did it for me. And it's by Luc Besson, the same guy behind my favorite, The Fifth Element.

Kite Runner (2007). Picked up this movie after reading about it in time.com. The tagline goes: There is a way to be good again. If you are a mom like me, and you watch a movie about a molested child, you just couldn't help but cry. It just broke my heart.

The Band's Visit (2007). Another foreign film that the hubby got hold of from somewhere. It's just as the title says: the band's visit. An Egyptian police band got invited in Israel to play during the inauguration of an Arab arts center in a remote town. Stubborn to ask assistance from the Egyptian Embassy re their itinerary, they went to look for the town on their own. Of course they ended up in the wrong town and got a taste of the local life. There's the conductor who just wanted to conduct, the new recruit who didn't have the discipline expected of a policeman, the composer who just couldn't finish his masterpiece and the conflicts that people deal with in a quiet town. Nothing grand about this movie, it's worth a nod though.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007). Anything with Bill Murray in it, no matter how small a role he played, is guaranteed twisted. Of course that's just me and I got into that conclusion after watching Lost in Translation. What can I say about this movie.... hmmmm... I think, you should just watch it. Yeah, that's about it. I liked it, but I couldn't quite place the words to describe what I particularly liked about the movie. I just like it. Much like The Royal Tenenbaums, which was also by Wes Anderson. You have to watch it, it's just twisted!

I guess that's just about it, the 16 movies I watched while I was nursing my pineapple face. My scars have all healed but I still get haunted by these movies. Hmmm... can I call in sick again next week?

Chicken Pox Chronicles : Watching Movies #2

There Will Be Blood (2007). The movie that won Daniel Day-Lewis his second Oscar trophy. The thing with Danny Boy is that he IS the character in every movie he plays. In this movie, he is Daniel Plainview, the struggling silver miner who found money in oil. He'll hustle you out of any deal if he can, buying lands and operating oil fields. Some guy. He's not as scary as Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem in No Country...) but you will find everything about him disgusting. And the movie just ended with "I'm finished." What the...

Love in the Time of Cholera (2007). Read the book... wait a minute, have I actually read it? was this what I read? After seeing Javier Bardem in No Country... it's kind of awkward to see him portray the lovestruck lover that was Florentino Ariza. I liked the part when he paced back and forth in front of a cabin door, I won't tell you why he did that but it was really silly.
The Savages (2007). I was half expecting a comedy of sorts or maybe a thriller judging from the title of the movie. What I got, though, was a movie about coming to terms with relationships, caring for an ailing father with dementia and dealing with the success/failures of a sibling. The movie was fine. Maybe I expected too much. The conflicts were not enough to really leave you heavy hearted. It just didn't do that for me.
St. Trinian's (2007). Wohooo, another breakfast movie. Something you would want to see with your teenage niece who's into emo or goethes or just needed to belong. As for me, it's a pretty excuse to see Colin Firth. The tagline says: school can be a riot. So you could expect to the see the schoolgirls in an anarchic environment triumph in saving the day. Was that Russell Brand? He's causing some stir with his entry to Hollywood films via Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He wasn't funny is this movie. I wonder how he'd fair in Hollywood.

A Good Year (2006). Now here's a movie I did not expect to like. It's fun! A London-based broker/ trader forced to deal with the estate of a beloved uncle who died without executing a will, found a local girl to his liking, and learned more about the past that he has given up for a financially secure life in London. Max Skinner (Russell Crowe) calls the traders on the floor lab rats (loved it!). I just can't get enough of the English twang again. I'm so used to seeing Crowe in serious films I didn't expect he could carry a light movie like this one.
